Abstract

The Center for British Studies at the University of California, Berkeley has funding to pursue decentred studies of British governance. It is hosting a series of workshops, including this one on urban governance. The workshops seek to decenter governance by focusing on the diverse meanings – elite narratives and local traditions – that inspire diverse governing practices across time, space, and policy sector. In doing so, we hope to move away from comprehensive accounts of governance. We want, instead, to explore the messy and contested nature of governing practices, and in doing so, emphasise the gap between governing rationalities and actual practices at the micro-level.
