Dr Kim McKee was interviewed by The National for their front-page feature on
Rising Rents and Falling Standards Bring Misery, published 16th December.
Dr Kim McKee presented at a conference organised by the Centre for British Studies at the University of California, Berkeley, 5 December 2014. The conference, organised by
Professor Mark Bevir, explored the theme: “Governmentality after Neoliberalism: the British experience”.
Drs Kim McKee and Tom Moore published a blog
“Problematising Generation Rent” on 5th December from their on-going
Mind the (Housing) Wealth Gap research project, funded by Leverhulme.
Dr Adriana Soaita presented her doctoral research at an invited seminar at Heriot-Watt University on 3rd December. Her paper was entitled: ‘Space consumption and housing inequality: measuring overcrowding and “under-occupancy” in Romania’.

Katherine Ellsworth-Krebs is the winner of this year’s Housing Studies Association Valerie Karn memorial prize for the best paper by an early career housing academic. Her winning paper '
Home-ing in on Domestic Energy Research: exploring the effect of ‘house’ and ‘home’ suggests that the ontological priority given to the ‘home’ results in scholarship which considers both social and physical aspects that shape demand.
CHR co-organised Scotland’s only
Parliament Week speaking event, in collaboration with the
Scottish Youth Parliament and the
Byre Theatre. Entitled: “IMAGINE …. Could a non-party Scottish Parliament work?” the event was chaired by the Centre’s Director, Dr Kim McKee.
Dr Kim McKee has joined the
Economic and Social Research Council’s (ESRC) peer review college as one of its experts on social policy and urban geography. This is a two year appointment.
CHR launches its new online, open-access
‘Briefings’ paper series. The first paper in the series is entitled: “Ethnic Inequalities in the Labour Market”, by Albert Sabater (CHR/CPC) and Gemma Catney (Univeristy of Liverpool).

Dr Kim McKee launches a new collaborative
‘Critical Urbanists’ Blog, which seeks to offer an online platform for urban scholars and practitioners to offer commentary on contemporary urban issues. The blog is managed by an editorial team drawn from the Universities of: St Andrews (McKee, Reid, Leahy); Sheffield (Moore, Flint, Inch); Stirling (Crawford, Matthews, Robertson & Theakstone); Westminster (Manzi); York (Meers); and Bristol (Manley).
Dr Louise Reid has her paper:
‘Deal or no deal?: assessing the UK’s new Green Deal’ accepted in Open House International, in a special issue on ‘Improving Energy Efficiency in the Housing Stock’.
The Centre for Housing Research launches its new
strategy document. This follows on from its change of leadership and strategic direction. A relaunch event is also planned for February 2015.

CHR Associate Dr Tom Moore is co-organiser of the 2015 Housing Studies Association annual conference: ‘
Housing the Generations’, April 2015.
Dr Kim McKee delivered an invited talk to the delegates of the annual Employer’s in Voluntary Housing conference, 5th October, Crieff Hydro. The theme of Kim’s talk was: ‘the future of social housing in Scotland’.
CHR Associate, Professor Joe Doherty presented at the ninth European Observatory on Homelessness conference in Warsaw, 19th September.
Dr Kim McKee was invited to write a
guest blog for Shelter Scotland reflecting on the national obsession with house prices and home ownership.
Dr Kim McKee published a special journal issue in Housing Theory and Society, arising from her recent ESRC seminar series: “
The Big Society, Localism and Housing Policy”.
A team of CHR researchers led by Dr Donald Houston published research on the “Gaps in the Housing-safety Net” arising from research conducted on behalf of Shelter.
PhD student Ciaran McDonald co-convened a session at the RGS-IGB conference in London on the topic of: “Culture and the city: what place do the arts have in our urban spaces?”
CHR Associate, Dr Tom Moore published a report on his recent British Academy funded research on the housing and social impacts of Community Land Trusts. Entitled: “Affordable Homes for Local Communities: the effects and prospects of Community Land Trusts in England”, the report can be downloaded from the publication section of the CHR website.

An interview with Dr David McCollum was shown on BBC Scotland’s
Sunday Politics. David spoke about the topic of immigration, in particular, Scotland’s attempts to attract migrants.

Dr David McCollum, who specialises in research relating to welfare, labour markets and immigration, has joined the Centre for Housing Research. The Centre also welcomes four Associate Members: Drs Tom Moore (University of Sheffield), Beverley Searle (University of Dundee), Sharon Leahy (University of St Andrews) and Tobias Jung (University of St Andrews).
Albert Sabater has contributed to a new book entitled:
Social-Spatial Segregation: concepts, processes and outcomes. This edited volume brings together leading researchers from the UK, the USA and Europe.
Dr Kim McKee was featured in the University library’s recent
blog to celebrate reaching 4000 open access hits! Kim has the highest open Access Ratio in the University, with her 2009 paper
'Post-Foucauldian Governmentality: what does it offer critical social policy?' the fourth most downloaded paper of all the Open Access publications in PURE last year, and the fifth most viewed.
CHR PhD student Ciaran McDonald has recently returned from a 3 month internship with the Scottish Government. He joined the Creativity Team in April on a placement which focused on the concept of ‘design thinking’ and its application in areas of government policy.

Dr Kim McKee, has secured a small research grant from the Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland to explore the phenomenon of ‘Generation Rent’ in the Scottish context (Jan-March 2015). This builds on her current
Mind the (Housing) Wealth Gap, Leverhulme funded research project.
Adriana Soaita was invited to co-ordinate WS-02 East European Housing & Urban Policy at the
European Network of Housing Researcher’s conference in Edinburgh, 1-4 July 2014. Several colleagues from CHR also presented papers at this important international housing event: Chowdhury, Miao, McKee, Reid and Soaita. Rosen Chowdhury’s attendance was supported by an early-career
bursary awarded by the Housing Studies Association.
Drs Kim McKee and Louise Reid were appointed CHR's new Directors, effective from 1 July. They replaced interim Director Dr Donald Houston.

European Population conference in Budapest, 25-28 June.
Tom Moore presented findings from his recent research on community-land trusts at an event organised by the Cairngorms National Park Authority and the Royal Deeside Partnership, held in Ballater on the 24th June.

Tom Moore was invited to attend a consultation event held at Windsor Castle 25-28 May. Organised by the
Building and Social Housing Foundation (BSHF) it considered the issues around
Scaling up Community-led Housing.
The datasets for our Client Record's and Outcomes Project (formerly Supporting People) have been completed for 2013/14 and published
online. The total records collected and validated amounted to
279,309, for all form types. We are pleased to announce the project is continuing for the 2014/15 reporting year, in partnership with 80+ commissioning authorities.
Dr Adriana Soaita took part at an Idea Event Workshop that explored the theme of ‘Home not Housing: Engaging with wellbeing outcomes’ which aimed to make a contribution to the development of policy and practice in Scotland and elsewhere.
Dr Kim McKee, University of St Andrews, introduced
issue 10 of The Evidence, a practitioner focused publication produced by the Housing Quality Network (HQN). This themed issue focused on housing and antisocial behaviour.
A policy paper by Darja Reuschke and Duncan Maclennan summarising a seminar on Business Investment and Housing which was jointly organised by CHR and the Scottish Government in April 2013 was published. This seminar was part of a research project about the consequences of the mortgage crisis on small businesses.

Tom Moore and Kim McKee attended the annual Housing Studies Association conference held at the University of York from 15-17th April 2014. They presented their paper reflecting on the use of online focus group methodologies used for fieldwork in the Mind the (Housing) Wealth Gap project.
Dr Kim McKee was elected as the new Chair of the Housing Studies Association (HSA). Kim is the youngest Chair to be elected by the HSA. In the year ahead she will prioritise the expansion of benefits for members, particularly early-career researchers. She also confirmed the forthcoming annual conference, co-organised by St Andrews colleague Dr Tom Moore, on the theme of ‘Housing the Generations’ (8-10 April 2015).

Professor Duncan Maclennan retired, on March 31st, from his full time Chair at the School of Geography and Geosciences at the University of St Andrews and stepped down from the Directorship of the Centre for Housing Research. He has taken up two quarter-time Professorships, one as Professor of Public Policy at the University of Glasgow and the other at the School of Management at the University of St Andrews. Dr Donald Houston has taken over the CHR directorship role.
Dr Kim McKee and Dr Tom Moore of CHR convened a seminar in the ESRC seminar series ‘The Big Society, Localism and Housing Policy’ looking at the implications of the big society and localism for the future of social housing.

CHR Research Fellow Julie Tian was awarded the Regional Studies Association’s Early Career Research Grant of over £9,000. This research will explore the disjuncture of nationalised affordable housing strategies and localised human capital market in Chinese Cities.

Dr Albert Sabater of CHR presented his research on residential segregation by ethnic group and age at a Leverhulme Trust sponsored roundtable workshop on Ethnic diversity, population change and 'integration' at the University of Liverpool.
CHR Director, Professor Duncan Maclennan is awarded lifetime honorary membership of the Royal Town Planning Institute.
