Dr Tom Moore delivered a presentation at the International Social Innovation Research Conference titled ‘
From experimentation to replication: comparing self-help housing and community land trust facilitation’. The presentation was based on a working paper co-authored with Professor David Mullins of the University of Birmingham. It compared and contrasted the different models of facilitation used to support community land trust and self-help housing groups and considered the implications of these for the future expansion and replication of community-led housing initiatives. The conference was held between 12-14 September at the University of Birmingham.
Dr Beverley Searle convened a stream on the theme of Intergenerational Justice at the ESPAnet Annual Conference. The stream discussed the growing importance of the transmission of resources and the manner of their acquisition in determining social divisions and life chances of younger and older generations. The conference was attended by delegates from over 26 countries and was held between 6-8 September at the University of Edinburgh.

Dr Kim McKee co-edited a special issue of the journal
Housing Theory and Society on the theme of: 'Housing in Hard Times: marginality, inequality and class'. The papers are drawn from the 2011 annual Housing Studies Association conference which the editors also co-organised.

Dr Kim McKee was successful in securing funding from the Economic and Social Research Council for a Seminar Series on ‘The Big Society, Localism and Housing Policy’. This is a collaborative project between the University of St Andrews, Queens University Belfast, Sheffield University and Cardiff University. It will establish an inter-disciplinary, cross-sector network, with the first of the three seminars scheduled for spring 2013.

Dr Kim McKee published a report on “Housing Associations and the Big Society: lessons from Scotland’s community housing sector”. The research, funded by the Carnegie Trust, explored the relevance of the Big Society for housing policy in Scotland through a focus on community anchor housing associations.

Professor Duncan Maclennan was keynote speaker at the EPSON-INTERSTRAT Event in Edinburgh on 30th March 2012, speaking on “Urban Scotland: An Agenda for sustainable economic growth”. The audience was made up of approximately 60 practitioners and researchers from the UK and across Europe.

Dr Beverley Searle gave an open lecture as part of the University of St Andrews Beacon Lecture series. Beverley highlighted some of the work that is being done in the Centre for Housing Research on changes that have taken place in the provision of housing finance.

Dr Darja Reuschke is invited by the Wohnforum at the EHT Zurich to deliver a paper at the seminar ‘Today here, tomorrow there – Reasons and consequences of multilocational living’. Darja’s paper: "Beyond traditional household conceptions – multilocational living arrangements and their impacts on big cities and agglomerations".

Dr Andy Park who heads the Centre for Housing Market Analysis within the Scottish Government visited CHR and presented his detailed work on the impact Housing Benefit changes which are part of the Welfare Reform Bill of the UK Government. His talk focused on how to work within the beaurocracy to create impact.

Dr Kim McKee was an invited participant to a roundtable event with Prof. Diane Coyle in York, organised by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. The event aimed to explore the challenges that Diane’s work raises for organisations like the JRF, as well as other research institutions and think-tanks.

Dr Kim McKee delivered an invited seminar presentation to the School of Geographical Sciences, University of Bristol on 21st February. Kim presented a paper co-authored with Dr Kirsteen Paton (University of Glasgow) and Dr Gerry Mooney (Open University Scotland) on “Class, Citizenship and Regeneration: Glasgow’s Commonwealth Games 2014”. The paper will be published in Antipode later this year.

CHR holds roundtable Facing the Challenges to Housing Scotland’s People: This invitational roundtable brought together participants from business, government, the housing sector and academia. Organised as a Knowledge Exchange event by Sharon Chisholm, the participants judged it to be immensely important to their work. In these times of changing policies and diminishing resources, sectors are encouraged to work together to find ways to meet the growing housing need in Scotland. A follow up event is to be held in June. Four of the Centre’s staff provided papers along with other distinguished speakers from the UK, Europe, Canada and Australia.

CHR hosts first international webinar: A webinar titled Change and Leadership led by Charles Lovatt of the School of Management was successfully held using the WebEx programme. It was held in two separate time slots to accommodate both North America and Australia. The innovative programme allowed participants to see each other, view the presentation and participate in a discussion.

The Centre for Knowledge Exchange for Scotland’s Cities was officially launched with a conference titled Developing an Agenda held at the University of St Andrews. CHR’s Professor Duncan Maclennan and Professor Iain Docherty of Glasgow University successfully raised the resources needed to co-launch the centre. Funds have begun to be committed for research.
